Special Issue of Emerald Insight Industrial Robot Journal on “Real-world mobile robot systems”

We invite all the participants of CLAWAR 2016 to consider extending their work presented in the conference to a high-quality journal article for the follow up Special Issue in Industrial Robot Journal.

One of the most important features for a robot system working in a real-world application is mobility. Mobile robots should be intelligent systems capable of a multitude of tasks while navigating either in indoor or outdoor environments. The majority of the challenges and issues in mobile robotics arise from the uncertainties involved in sensing and acting in unstructured and unpredictable real-world environments. Tomorrow’s mobile robotics systems should be able to understand and operate effectively in such environments, address safe interaction with humans and adapt their behaviour autonomously.

This goal of this special issue is to document and highlight recent real-world applications of mobile robot systems in a broad variety of sectors. In the recent years, various interesting methods and approaches have been proposed that tackle different aspects of mobile robotics. This journal special issue will therefore present the state-of-the-art in the field and discuss future challenges and research opportunities.

List of Topics

Papers are solicited on real-world applications of mobile robots. Invited topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Localization, mapping and navigation
  • Robot vision and 3D sensing
  • Multi-sensor fusion
  • Active perception
  • Behaviour-based robotics
  • Task and path planning
  • Learning and adaptation
  • Human-robot interaction
  • Experimental evaluation and benchmarking
  • Novel applications of mobile robot systems (e.g., in areas of industrial, construction, agriculture, mining, underwater, intelligent transport, search and rescue, medical, safety and space robotics)

Important Dates

Paper submission deadline: 30 November, 2016

We invite you to contribute with high-quality, original manuscripts based on your research related to the above-mentioned topics to this upcoming special issue. Authors should prepare their manuscripts according to the “Instructions to Authors” of the Industrial Robot Journal, as found at:

Please indicate that you are submitting to the “Real-world mobile robot systems” special issue when prompted at the bottom of the “Details and Comments” tab. Feel free to contact any of the guest editors for further information.
