Florianópolis is the capital city of the State of Santa Catarina. It is also known as Floripa, or “A Ilha da Magia“, the Magic Island. It was founded on March 23, 1673.
There are at least 42 beaches on the island, and even more, according to some. Some of the most famous are Jurerê, Ingleses, Mole, Joaquina, and Campeche. The population of Florianópolis is about 500,000 people. And in the metropolitan area, which includes São Jose, Palhoça, and Biguaçu, there are about 1.3 million inhabitants. Floripa’s economy is heavily based on information technology, tourism and the service industry.
Its natural beauty, fishing, folklore, traditions, artisanal handmade lace, cuisine and colonial architecture are just a few of the areas that contribute to the culture here.
